GM to idle Lansing plant due to semiconductor chip shortage Jamie L. LaReau, Detroit Free Press © Melissa Vaeth for General Motors General Motors added a third shift at its Wentzville (Mo.) Assembly plant last September to build trucks and vans.
General Motors is halting production at two of its plants that make midsize SUVs, including one in Lansing, due to a parts shortage.
But the automaker said Thursday that it is able to restart its plant in Missouri that makes its midsize pickups, though many of GM s other plants remain idle.
The auto industry has been faced with a global crisis involving a massive shortage of semiconductor chips used in various car parts. It s forced Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis, formerly called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, to idle many factories, too.
Both of the automaker s Lansing, Mich., plants will take downtime this month.
Lansing Delta Township Assembly, which builds the Buick Enclave and Chevy Traverse crossovers, will halt production for one week starting April 19, while Lansing Grand River, which has been down since March 15, will extend its production stoppage through the week of April 26. Lansing Grand River builds the Chevy Camaro and Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans.
CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario, and Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, Kan., will extend downtime through the week of May 10. Both plants have been down since the week of Feb. 8.
GM has continued production and regular shifts at its full-size pickup or SUV plants throughout the chip crisis, but the automaker has resorted to building some pickups without certain modules.
GM car prices surge as more plants close during the chip shortage
General Motors is temporarily shutting down more auto plants, leading to tight inventories at dealerships and higher prices for customers. The global chip shortage is to blame.
The company announced it would shut production at two US plants in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Lansing Delta Township, Michigan, in the coming weeks. GM also extended shutdowns at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, and the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, which have both been idled since February 8. And it will continue the shutdown at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant, which has been down since March 15.
