A Lompoc federal prison inmate who contracted COVID-19 last spring has died, according to the Bureau of Prisons.
Christopher Carey, an inmate at the Lompoc Federal Correctional Institution, had tested positive in May and was placed in medical isolation, BOP representatives said in a news release Friday.
Prison staff provided treatment and monitored his condition until deeming him recovered May 20 following an isolation period and presenting no symptoms, per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
On Aug. 20, Carey was transported from the prison to a local hospital due to progressive paralysis requiring bedside care.
