For a decade and more, we’ve had no official inquiry into quantitative easing – the rapid expansion of the Bank of England’s balance sheet. With QE funds propping up stock and bond markets, keeping financial markets buoyant while ensuring the Government could borrow cheaply, this is a policy with many powerful friends.
The task of questioning the most controversial economic measure in a generation has, for years now, fallen to a few obsessive columnists like me. For the consensus backing QE – the massive, ongoing injection of newly created money into the economy – has spanned the political spectrum, from Westminster to Whitehall, the City and beyond.
