Two fires at a home on McDonald Circle near Commerce Thursday night have been ruled arson.
Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John King announced the determinations today, saying the first fire at 783 McDonald Circle was reported at 7:55 p.m. Thursday, with the second occurring some 40 minutes later.
“According to the occupants, a fire was found on the front porch of the residence in a plastic bucket about 40 minutes before the second fire occurred,” King said in a statement. “The second fire caused minor damage to the right side of the structure. Both fires were extinguished before the fire department arrived.”

HOMER – Drivers accustomed to speeding through Banks County on U.S. 441/Ga. 15 on school days soon should take note of new measures in place to improve safety of those traveling near the county’s schools.
The Banks County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Banks County Board of Education and Banks County Commission, has added camera-equipped speed detection devices to the county school zones, both on U.S. 441/Ga. 15 and on Historic Homer Highway.
The camera-equipped speed detection system recently was approved for use by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
“Our school zone speed safety program for the middle and high schools started on Monday, Jan. 25, which commenced our 30-day warning period,” said Banks County Sheriff’s Maj. UGA carpenter charged with shooting at motorist in Banks County
A University of Georgia carpenter has been charged with shooting a woman’s car as she drove through Banks County on Dec. 11 in what appears to be a case of road rage, according to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, Bradley Dennis Payne, 52, of Sunshine Church Road, Toccoa, was arrested Dec. 23.
Payne was denied bond on the aggravated assault charge and remained Tuesday in the county jail. A UGA spokesman contacted Monday had not released a statement on Payne’s employment status as of Tuesday.
The 31-year-old victim, also from Toccoa, was not injured, Banks County Sheriff s Maj. Carissa McFaddin said.
