Snow fell on the Port Hills in June and may fall there again this weekend.
Low pressure and “very cold air” over the South Island could bring snow to parts of Canterbury this weekend. According to Blue Skies Weather, a “significant” amount of snow is expected above 400 metres, with 5 to 10 centimetres of snow accumulating above 400m and more than 20cm possible above 500m. Below 400m, 3cm to 5cm may accumulate on the western Plains and eastern foothills. Travellers are told to expect snow on alpine passes on Sunday night and Monday, while roads on Banks Peninsula and the eastern hill country are also likely to be affected.
