4 On Thursday April 22, 2021 Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Atlantic and Office in Charge of Construction (OICC) Florence participated in a ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of a five-year effort to revitalize Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River and MCAS Cherry Point. The ground breaking was held at the soon to be replaced 10th Marine Regiment headquarters which will be the first of many Hurricane Florence related projects. Capt. Jim Brown, commanding officer, OICC Florence, began the ceremony by delivering a commitment to the installation. “We need to return it back to what it was, and in the process, make it better, and more lethal than what it was before,” Brown said. “We will endeavor to do that.”

347 Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island was recognized for their efforts in leading the way in the Department of the Navy on environmental sustainability during a visit by the Secretary of the Navy April 1, 2021. During his first visit to the base, Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas W. Harker presented the depot with the 2021 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Award, which recognized the depot for excellence in integrating environmental and operational sustainability efforts and mitigating impacts from storm surge and sea level rise through 2065. In a memo announcing the depot as this year’s winner, Harker said the depot’s efforts “demonstrated that early and deliberate planning could yield a benefit cost ratio of 5.21, providing $675 million of net infrastructure, training and human health benefits, thus maximizing the operational budget and securing the depot’s mission.”

NORFOLK Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader Mario Torres, a 37-year government service career employee at Public Works Department (PWD) Great Lakes, and North Chicago, Illinois native, has been named recipient of the 2021 Peggy B. Craig Lifetime Service Award. The prestigious award, given each year, was established in 2012 and named in honor of a longtime NAVFAC headquarters employee to recognize civil servants who best personify a career of service, selflessness, and dedication with 20 or more years of service to NAVFAC, the 1st Naval Construction Division, the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering, or any subordinate unit.

9 SAN DIEGO – Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southwest Energy Team was selected Dec. 8 for the 2020 Federal Energy and Water Management Award by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). “I am pleased to announce that your team has been selected to receive a 2020 Federal Energy and Water Management Award by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP),” said Leslie Nicholls, DOE FEMP director in an email to the award winners. “This distinguished honor recognizes outstanding contributions in energy and water efficiency, resilience, and technology achievements; distributed energy; cyber security; and fleet management from within the federal government.
