Federal weekly assistance of $300 added to approved unemployment claims during the pandemic is hurting businesses desperate for workers, some politicians and employers say. “You may need some of that stuff in places like New York, Seattle, San Francisco . but it s a smokescreen,” U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., told Newsmax last week. “People are staying at home, watching Netflix, because the federal government is incentivizing (them) to do so.”

By a number of metrics, the region s workforce landscape seems to be healthy and the economy rebounding from a virus-fueled slowdown. But there is one glaring exception. Throughout virtually every industry in northeast Indiana, employers are asking the same question: Where are the workers? There is an air of frustration bordering on desperation, and there seems to be no speedy remedy other than people who are able need to get back to work.

Whitley company Sailrite to expand Existing facility in Columbia City to add 50 jobs by 24 JIM CHAPMAN | The Journal Gazette A Whitley County company that makes fabric, tools, hardware and sewing supplies for sailors is planning a $3.25 million expansion, creating up to 50 new jobs by the end of 2024. Sailrite Enterprises Inc. announced it will expand its existing 71,000-square-foot headquarters at 2390 East 100 South, just southeast of Columbia City, and equip it with expanded supplies of stainless steel rigging, webbing, fabric and leather, as well as new foam packaging machinery and material handling equipment. The 32,500-square-foot expansion, a portion of which will include professional office space, will enable Sailrite to grow its team and serve expanded markets in the DIY sewing arena, a news release from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said.
