GAINESVILLE, Ga. It s been months in the making and now health care workers from different parts of the state are getting the chance to take the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
The Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville received a shipment Thursday morning. During the evening, the Northeast Georgia Health System said seven frontline workers were vaccinated.
“It feels like Christmas came early,” said Carol Burrell, NGHS president and CEO. “It’s been a long eight months for our organization and our community, as we continue to see record numbers of COVID patients. We still have a long journey ahead of us, but simply having a vaccine in our hands is a tremendous and positive step forward.”

Seven Northeast Georgia Health System frontline health care workers pulled up their sleeves Thursday, Dec. 17, and flexed after receiving the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. John Delzell, the incident commander at the health system, said he sees these first doses as “hope for the light at the end of the tunnel.”
“I feel like it’s the beginning to an end of a pandemic,” said Tamika Johnson, the charge nurse in the mobile medical unit who received one of the first doses.
New trolleys coming to Gainesville
The City of Gainesville recently announced a new trolley system coming to the city.
The trolleys will only be used for special events at first; however, beginning in the spring they will operate for regular lunch routes downtown. Gainesville Community Services Director Phillippa Lewis Moss said that city officials are looking to make the trolleys free and hope that the new transportation will encourage people to visit downtown lunch eateries.
New Browns Bridge set to open for travel on Friday
A replacement bridge for the old Browns Bridge on Georgia 369 over Lake Lanier will open to traffic Friday, Dec. 18 after nearly three years of construction.

The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in Georgia, and health care providers in Hall County say they may be able to administer the shot sometime late this week.
Georgia received its first shipment of 5,850 doses on Monday, Dec. 14, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
The Pfizer vaccine arrived in coastal Georgia at two public health locations with ultracold freezers required for storage and temperature control. Additional shipments of vaccine are expected later this week at facilities in other parts of the state, including metro Atlanta, according to the release.
