Hospital staff at Northeast Georgia Health System and first responders are struggling to find bed space for patients as today the number of COVID-positive patients hit a new record.
“We’re used to having one of three busiest Emergency Departments in the state here in Gainesville, but our current situation is unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” said Dr. Mohak Dave , Chief of Emergency Medicine for NGHS. “We’re treating patients in hallways and waiting rooms every day. Sometimes patients have to spend the night there, because there’s no bed available.”
The latest report this morning from the NGHS website shows 340 COVID-positive patients, a new record, are being treated across all Northeast Georgia Medical Center hospitals and long-term care facilities. The next-closest number to that record was 322 COVID-positive patients on December 22, 2020.

Some healthcare workers have reported falling ill with COVID-19 after getting their first vaccine dose but that s not a surprise, as protection can take as long as 2 weeks to kick in, researchers said.
A nurse from California made headlines last week after getting sick 6 days after he received his first shot. Since then, other healthcare workers have shared similar experiences on social media.
Trauma surgeon Qaali Hussein, MD, for example, developed COVID-19 12 days after her first COVID-19 injection. I m 12 days post 1st dose of the vaccine so I do not have full protection yet, Hussein wrote on Twitter, stating that she should have at least some protection from severe illness. I think we definitely need to ramp up vaccinations and would highly recommend getting vaccinated as soon as you are able to.
With Georgia topping 5,000 current hospitalizations for COVID-19, public health experts are calling for more state restrictions to curb the virus surge.
Yet another ominous factor popped up Tuesday: Georgia Public Health officials reported the state’s first case of the more contagious COVID-19 variant discovered in Britain last month and subsequently detected in several nations and U.S. states.
The variant was discovered during analysis of a specimen sent by a Georgia pharmacy to a commercial lab, state officials said. The Georgia resident is an 18-year-old male with no travel history, and is currently in isolation at home. Public Health said it’s working to identify close contacts of the individual and will monitor them closely and test them for the variant.

A New Year s Eve party in Gainesville turned deadly when a man opened fire, wounding two people and then killing himself.
Hall County Sheriff s Office 1st Lt. Chris Dale said deputies and officers with the Gainesville Police Department were called to 100 Spring Street in New Holland around 3:15 a.m. today. The call was in reference to a man shooting inside the building and reports that people had sustained injuries at that location, Dale said in an email statement. Deputies began to clear the building and located three people who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Dale said two people, identified as Warner Brock and Jessie Brownlee, suffered critical injuries in the shooting. Both were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
