In March, President Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into law with $343 million earmarked for Jacksonville/Duval infrastructure projects. And a substantially larger federal infrastructure-targeted bill is making its way through Congress now. So why are our City leaders considering a $1 billion 30-year gas tax bill for infrastructure when the federal money is already starting to flow to Jacksonville, signaling that we have entered a new FDR-like era? And why didn’t the $343 million in federal money available to Jacksonville show up on the City Council radar long before last week?

The invasion of East Florida began March 10, 1812, when Georgian troops crossed the St. Mary s River into Spanish territory. U.S. President James Madison had approved the plan. But the actions soon became unpopular with the American public and Madison reversed his position and withdrew support for the filibusters in East Florida. The filibusters did not withdraw and became their own little army. James Burkholder Smith published his book The Plot to Steal Florida: President Madison s Phony War in 1983 about the 1812 invasion. Smith spent 23 years with the CIA and saw the plan to annex East Florida as setting a precedent for a number of 20th-century wars, including Vietnam.

The airport in St. Augustine may have commercial flights back on its schedule by the end of the year.  Since 2018, no commercial flights have taken off here at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport. Richard Goldman, the St. Johns County Visitors and Convention Bureau Director said, The feeling is we are significantly underserved. First Coast News has obtained a copy of an application the airport has submitted, trying to get a federal grant to get commercial flights on the tarmac again. In the application, a letter from American Airlines states its interest in providing that service with flights connecting St. Augustine to Charlotte, North Carolina and it’s hub.
