Ecru expands its town limits by 3 square miles
March 13, 2021 GMT
ECRU, Miss. (AP) A north Mississippi town is growing.
Ecru expanded its limits Wednesday after many years of planning. Circuit Judge Michael Malski gave final approval for the expansion last month, but the town had to wait 30 days before it became official, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported.
As a result, the town is now 3 square miles (7.8 square kilometers) larger.
“The town is currently 4 square miles,” Mayor Jeff Smith said. “This will add the additional three.”

Smith said that 90% of the expansion is south while 10% of it runs west.

(CN) What was praised as a success story just a decade ago, declining mortality rates across the board, has seen a steady reversal in one group largely due to an increase in cardiovascular disease and untreated hypertension.
Researchers from Princeton studied adult mortality data from 1990 to 2018 and calculated how long the average 25-year-old could expect to live before turning 75. They published their findings Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The team looked at mortality data across cohorts using death certificates from the National Vital Statistical System, which includes 48.9 million deaths between 1990 and 2018, and drew on population data from the American Survey and the Current Population Surveys.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) A Mississippi airport has hired a new executive director who has worked for other airports for 15 years.
Joseph Wheeler will begin his new job April 1 at Tupelo Regional Airport, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported.
He is currently airport director for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission in Galliano, Louisiana.
The Tupelo Airport Authority board voted Thursday to hire Wheeler. He will succeed Cliff Nash, who retired in January after more than five years with the Tupelo airport.
Wheeler said he wants to get “some flight instruction going on out here.”
