For the third time in a row, the spine research team of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, has won the North American Spine Society’s (NASS) outstanding paper award in basic science.
By bagging the award for 2021 for the paper ‘
Why do Modic Changes Result in Poor Clinical Outcomes? – Novel Insights from Proteomic analysis of Lumbar discs with Modic changes’, Ganga Hospital became the first institution to have won the honour consecutively for three years.
“This is a very coveted award which is jointly awarded by NASS and The Spine Journal (TSJ) which is the official research publication journal of the society. All the spine research organisations around the world fiercely compete for these awards,” said S. Rajasekaran, chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at Ganga Hospital who heads the team.

The Spine research team of Coimbatore-based Ganga Hospital has bagged the prestigious North American Spine Society s award for the third consecutive year.
This year, the team has won the award for the research ‘Why do modic changes result in poor clinical outcomes? - Novel insights from proteomic analysis of lumbar discs with modic changes’, according to a hospital release. Headed by S.Rajasekaran, the team has been performing pioneering research in the field of spine surgery.
The award is presented jointly by North American Spine Society and The Spine Journal, an international journal. The award-winning paper is published in the journal and the winning team would be invited to take part in the meeting of the Society to be held in USA.

Mark Gottlieb’s life changed in an instant when another driver crashed into his car, damaging four vertebrae in his upper spine and smashing six teeth.
In the months following that January 2019 crash, Gottlieb, 59, a marketing consultant in Little Ferry, New Jersey, got the teeth crowned and, for debilitating neck pain, tried injections, chiropractic care and physical therapy. The treatments were all covered by his Geico car insurance.
As in 12 other states, New Jersey law requires drivers to buy personal injury protection, or PIP, coverage to pay medical expenses. Gottlieb had the maximum: $250,000.
