NEW DELHI: Aiming to develop a method to predict collision from space debris,Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi, has received research funding from the National Super Computing Mission (NSM), implemented by the department of science and technology (DST).
The project titled ‘Orbit computation of Resident Space Objects for Space Situational Awareness’ has to be completed in two years. The project will be led by IIIT-Delhi faculty Sanat K Biswas and Arun Balaji Buduru.
Elaborating on the project, Biswas said, “There are more than 20,000 man-made objects of more than 10 cm in size floating around in near-earth space that pose collision threats to functional satellites. Predicting collision probability from these space objects is crucial from the national security perspective as well as for the protection of public and private space assets of Indian origin.”

While noting that China continues to undermine US influence globally, a four-star US general recently warned that China is also attempting to use influence in The Bahamas by offering large-scale economic investments and material support for infrastructure projects.
General Glen VanHerck, who serves as US Air Force commander for the US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and North American Aerospace Defense Command, made the comment while testifying before the US Senate Armed Services committee last month.
“Senator, we look closely at China’s influence,” he said.
“They are absolutely in the NORTHCOM AOR (area of responsibility), attempting to influence in The Bahamas, working through 5G, for example, the same thing in Mexico. We continue to defend all domains.”

Airbus solely qualifies for Canada s tanker procurement

Only Airbus and its A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft qualified to bid for Canada’s Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) Project, Canada announced on 1 April.
Canada seeks to replace its Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Airbus A310 MRTT (CC-150 Polariis in national service) aircraft. Boeing is developing its KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling tanker for the US Air Force (USAF).
Airbus, with its A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, was deemed the only company qualified to bid for Canada’s Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) Project. (Airbus)
