OLIVER PAIPOONGE – The Kam River Fighting Walleye may be sidelined by COVID-19, but the first-place squad isn’t standing pat. The expansion team on Wednesday announced it has acquired hometown hopeful Mackenzie Sedgwick, who opened the 2020-21 campaign with the Rayside-Balfour Canadians of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

COVID-19 Postpones Crunch Game

Emily Martin / Cochrane Crunch A bit of a disappointing end to 2020 for Collin Lapointe and the Cochrane Crunch. The team was supposed to play the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Wednesday night, but that game was postponed as a player on one of the teams came into close contact with someone showing COVID-19 symptoms. Lapointe, who hails from Dryden, is in his first year with the Crunch after two seasons with the U18 Kenora Thistles. Cochrane heads into the break with a record of 3-6-0-2. The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League is now on an extended holiday break with the Ontario-wide shutdown, and even though the league plans to continue play in 2021 there is not yet any word on what the schedule will look like.
