Twenty-three thousand vaccine doses have been allocated to First Nations for the month of April, and more than 37,000 are expected in May. The northern authority will receive 11,700 vaccinations and 25,740 will go to First Nations in south and central Saskatchewan.
Communities only began receiving the specifically allocated doses on April 6.
In Saskatchewan, vaccination of the province s on-reserve Indigenous population is the result of a partnership between Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), the provincial government and the NITHA.
The federal department will receive 14 per cent of the province s allocated COVID-19 vaccinations. They will also receive a 20 per cent increase over each community s population to account for off-reserve members who want to be vaccinated in their community.
Before April 16, the last time Pelican Narrows had no active COVID-19 cases was Nov. 19, when the community’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 was marked as recovered. The community experienced a first wave through late November and December, slowing down to just one active case remaining Dec. 30 before jumping up again. An outbreak designation for the entire community of Pelican Narrows was called by the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) Nov. 23. That designation remains in effect for the community, despite the drop in cases. A total of 21 people remain in precautionary isolation in the community, each contacts to previous positive cases. No people from Pelican Narrows are hospitalized in Saskatchewan due to COVID-19, as per the centre’s released statistics.
SASKATOON The number of COVID-19 variant cases is increasing in Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) communities where 10 cases have now been detected. We have very serious concern given the increase in cases of the variants, said NITHA’s chief medical health officer Dr. Nnamdi Ndubuka. The variants of concern are highly contagious, it is able to transmit more quickly to more people. The province s Far North West reporting area had eight variant cases and the Far North East had two reported cases as of Tuesday. Those numbers have been rising since April 1 when the province was reporting two variants cases in the Far North East.
