Pongal 2021: Makar Sankranti 2021 date and Puja Vidhi Add to Spiritual Diary The name Pongal is derived from the term pongu, meaning “overflow” or “Boiling over,” the term pongu is symbolic as it represents heating of the soil by the Sun, which in-turn helps the soil grow crops faster, marking the end of winter season. Pongal is also the name of a sweet dish made with rice which is boiled in milk and jaggery (gudh), which is consumed on all of the four auspicious days of the harvest festival. Pongal is celebrated on the first four days of Tai, the tenth month in the Tamil Calendar, and in the Georgian calendar Pongal is celebrated from 14th January till 17th January. While Pongal is celebrated mostly in southern India, on the same day North Indian States celebrate Makar Sankranti.
