New executive order mandates prioritizing climate change considerations throughout entire federal government. Enrique Saenz January 29, 2021
President Joe Biden has signed executive orders drawing the entire federal government into the fight against climate change.
The executive orders and directives task the government with taking on the climate crisis as a national security issue, with each level of government working to reduce climate change impacts while investing in measures that will encourage the establishment of a clean energy economy.
Defense installations, federal buildings and vehicles, power plants and other initiatives in Indiana could be affected by the new orders.
“In my view, we’ve already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis. We can’t wait any longer. We see it with our own eyes. We feel it. We know it in our bones, and it’s time to act,” Biden said during a press conference announcing the executive orders.

Floridaâs investor-owned power companies fell flat in a new report that ranked utilities around the country on their plans for renewable energy, including the two that service most of the Tampa Bay region.
The Sierra Club graded power companies based on what sources the companies expect to generate their power from by 2030. Plans for renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, increased scores, while coal and natural gas â particularly new coal and natural gas â decreased scores.
Dive Brief:
Despite setting goals to decarbonize their resource mix, many utility pledges amount to little more than meaningless greenwashing because power companies are not moving quickly enough to phase out fossil fuels and add clean energy, according to a new report and data set from Sierra Club.
The report grades utility decarbonization efforts based on coal plant retirement schedules, plans to add gas-fired capacity, and clean energy investment. Some utilities with carbon-neutral pledges received a failing grade using Sierra Club s methodology.
The utility sector defended its approach to the decarbonization process. The goals we have are a reflection of our current understanding of technology and economics, said Emily Fisher, senior vice president of clean energy at Edison Electric Institute.
