Waubonsee s Black History Month to explore history, poetry, music and more

• Black Greek Poets, 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11. An international poetry network of college-educated creatives with a focus on members of historically Black Greek fraternities and sororities within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, will use their platform as a means to bridge poetry and the power of community engagement through fostering a safe space where artistic pursuit can be nourished and positively developed. Join Rashid White, Jeffrey Big Homey Banks and Andrew Drew Drake as they share their spoken word poetry and provide an open mic for others to share their artistic expressions and receive feedback from the Black Greek Poets themselves.

Two years into his studies at Northern Illinois University, Daniel Timmer began his internship at McHenry, Ill.-based color concentrates maker Chroma Color Corp. A year later, he participated in an independent study course to research recycling e-waste. He started working full time at Chroma in December 2017, the same time he graduated from NIU with his bachelor s degree in manufacturing engineering. I enrolled in plastics courses at NIU because I knew it would be a good industry to work in plastics make up such a huge part of so many products in the world today, the manufacturing engineer said. The plastics industry has a bright future with room for growth, so I knew it would make an excellent career path for me.

With few or zero fans in attendance this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to stop playing the national anthem before home games garnered little notice until this week, when team owner Mark Cuban confirmed that he had directed the team to stop playing the song.
On Wednesday, however, the NBA decreed that all “all teams will play the national anthem in keeping with longstanding league policy.” So it seems Cuban’s attempt to stop playing the anthem will meet the same fate as others that came before it.
