Mike Brosseau breaks up fellow Andrean grad Sean Manaea s no-hitter

PRO BASEBALL Brosseau breaks up Manaea s no-hitter: Sean Manaea s bid to throw MLB s second no-hitter of the night and fifth of the season on Friday was broken up by Mike Brosseau. The Oakland southpaw had thrown seven no-hit innings before the Tampa Bay hitter, who specializes against left-handed pitching, laced a double to lead off the eighth inning. Brosseau came in to score and tie the game 1-1 on Mike Zunino s hit. The former Andrean teammates add the latest chapter to their storied careers. ESPN reporter Jeff Passan told The Times he hadn t heard of a hitter breaking up a pitcher s no-hitter, having both attended the same high school, but Passan pondered it potentially could have happened early in a game previously. Oakland went on to win the game 2-1 on a walk-off home run by Seth Brown. Manaea went 7 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out 10. Brosseau was 1 for 3 with the double and run scored.

Peoria fire chief Tony Ardis to retire after 27 years with department

PEORIA – Fire Chief Tony Ardis will retire next week, after about 18 months as the top official at the Peoria Fire Department, City Hall announced Thursday. His last day will be May 14, and he will replaced by Assistant Chief James Bachman, who also began with the department in 1994 and has risen through the ranks. He is a state-certified hazardous materials technician and a graduate of Northern Illinois University. Departmental succession plans typically elevate the assistant chief to the position after a chief departs. Bachman will be the city s fifth fire chief in a span of roughly six years. Kent Tomblin retired in 2015 after a roughly eight-year stint as chief. He was succeeded by his assistant chief, Chuck Lauss, who served for just over two years until leaving in January 2018 and later becoming fire chief in Urbana. Lauss was succeeded by his assistant chief, Ed Olehy, who served in the job from February 2018 to November 2019.

From Baghdad to pandemic: A Hines nurse s journey to treat his fellow veterans

Updated 5/6/2021 7:42 PM An Iraqi battlefield is not where most people decide what to do with the rest of their lives. Matt Mason is not most people.   From 2005 to 2006, the Army infantryman patrolled the Iraq-Syria border, quelled sectarian violence in Mosul and battled insurgents in Baghdad. He also had to figure out his college class schedule. My friend convinced me to go to college, and I had to choose a major, the soldier turned Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital nurse said. I really enjoyed the combat lifesaver courses we had to take and learn how to start IVs and do wound care, that sort of stuff. I figured I would just take this and see how it works out.
