In the 1945 musical Carousel, the grief stricken Julie Jordan attempts to sing You’ll Never Walk Alone following the sudden death of her lover, the protagonist Billy Bigelow. She breaks down after the first line in the arms of her cousin Nettie Fowler, who then sings the song to Julie. Oscar Hammerstein wrote the lyrics and Richard Rogers composed the instrumental piece specifically for this precise moment, allowing Nettie to portray a message of comfort, conciliation and inspiration to her cousin to keep going in times of suffering and struggle.
