As North Carolina s best high school cross country runners and teams gather to compete for the state s top prizes in cross country on Friday and Saturday at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, their successes reflect a commitment to succeed together amid a global pandemic that has turned their season upside down.
It s the end of January, a time when most high school runners find themselves running laps on the track indoors. Yet due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic that has riddled the nation, North Carolina distance runners instead find themselves racing at 5,000-meters in the dirt and mud during the cold winter months.

A former U.S. Marine was arrested in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday amidst chaotic rioting at the U.S. Capitol in what the police say was an “unrest-related” charge.
Jay Robert Thaxton, 46, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department for violating curfew at the 1400 block of New York Avenue NW following the storming of the Capitol as Congress attempted to certify presidential election results.
It is not yet clear where Thaxton was stationed while in the Marine Corps or what units he served in; however, multiple public records websites indicate he previously resided in Cherry Point, N.C., and Newport, N.C.

It’s January, which means lacrosse season is right around the corner. In the many southern states, the high school lacrosse season is a month away or sooner, especially this year.
High School lacrosse in the Tar Heel State is just 25 days away. January 25th marks opening day for teams in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) teams and February 15th marks the start of the season for teams in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISSA), which is made up entirely of private schools.
