The North Carolina Coastal Federation is calling for volunteers to join in a debris cleanup from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, in Wanchese.
Meet at Peele Family Dentistry, 2038 N.C. 345, to check in with organizers and collect supplies such as trash bags, gloves and other cleanup materials.
Federation staff will direct staff small groups of volunteers where to work and to maintain safe distances while conducting the cleanup. It will be required that volunteers wear a mask or face covering.

in 2019, Governor Roy Cooper signed legislation that funded and permitted state partners to remove the vessels. The new laws allow the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) to determine a vessel abandoned after an unsuccessful attempt to contact the last known owner and a posted notice on the vessel goes unanswered.
After Division of Coastal Management and North Carolina Coastal Federation officials assessed, documented, and prioritized the vessels, NCWRC tagged them for removal.

The Collaboratory for Coastal Adaptation over Space and Time, or C-CoAST, made up of coastal practitioners, stakeholders and researchers, hosted two virtual listening sessions in February with residents and stakeholders to better understand long-term priorities, and look at how short-term decision making can support or undermine priorities.
What the network learns during these sessions will help inform collaborative efforts to assist North Carolina coastal communities in meeting future challenges.
