FTA Awards $6.2MM in TOD Grants Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor Arizona’s Phoenix Public Transit Department will receive $1 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for transit-oriented development (TOD) planning at three stations of the proposed 1.6-mile Northwest Extension Phase II Light Rail project (station rendering above). Nine projects seven rail-specific will share $6.2 million in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants through the Pilot Program for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning. The funding will help “communities examine ways to improve economic development and multimodal connectivity, and encourages mixed-use development near transit stations,” FTA reported Dec. 15. Cape Fear Change in Motion to reduce Wilmington traffic

As the Wilmington area s population grows, so do long commute times and congested roadways.  With this in mind, Wilmington-area officials want to reduce vehicle miles traveled in the region by 10% between 2021 and 2025.  That s why officials from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, representatives from regional major employers and community stakeholders, who make up the committee Go Coast, have been working on a draft of Cape Fear Change in Motion 2020, a short-range plan outlining how to decrease traffic congestion in the area.  This plan is important because it identifies a variety of methods that residents and employers can take to reduce traffic congestion that don’t include expensive roadway projects, said Rebekah Roth​, interim planning and land use director for New Hanover County.

As part of the campaign, two virtual workshop sessions (one in English and the other in Spanish) will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
