Fuel tanker overturns, killing 1 and closing I-95 in N.C. March 7, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail SMITHFIELD, N.C. (AP) A North Carolina man has died after his fuel tanker overturned on Interstate 95. The Sunday morning accident near Smithfield left I-95 closed in both directions throughout the day. News reports showed the flipped over tanker sitting in the highway median, affecting traffic on both sides. An 4,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from the tanker. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the driver, 25-year-old Bryan Cook of Erwin, was driving south toward Fayetteville when he ran off the road and hit the guardrail around 6:15 a.m. Sunday. Neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash.

Thomasville: Police officer injured during suspect s capture

Updated: 6:07 PM EST Mar 5, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff A Thomasville police officer had to be airlifted to a hospital Thursday afternoon after he was seriously injured from being struck by a suspect s motorcycle during a chase.Thomasville police said the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department notified Davidson County Emergency Communications they were in pursuit of a motorcycle, with no registration plate, traveling northbound on I-85 at about 1:30 p.m. The chase continued northbound on US 29/US 70. A few moments later, Davidson County Emergency Communication notified Thomasville police that Rowan County was requesting assistance in the pursuit.Thomasville police initiated a mobile roadblock as the pursuit approached Kanoy Road. The mobile roadblock was executed and allowed for the motorcycle to come to a controlled stop. A biker was injured in a hit-and-run Thursday night.  According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Fuller Mill Road near Reddy Foxx Lane in Randolph County around 8:23 p.m. Troopers said Javier Alexander Estrada-Ochoa,18, of Thomasville N.C was biking north and was struck by a vehicle that was also traveling north.  The vehicle that collided with the bicycle failed to remain at the scene, troopers said.

Glenn McNeill Jr. said his retirement takes effect on April 1, news outlets reported.McNeill, who has been with the patrol since 1993, was appointed as the agency’s 27th commander by Gov. Roy Cooper in 2017. He was the second Black man to hold the position.After McNeill retires, Cooper will have over a month to choose a replacement.McNeill told WTVD when he took over as commander that he went into law enforcement because his mother was murdered when he was 10 years old and that the crime has never been solved. From Winston-Salem Journal The historic Todd General Store in the mountain community of Todd burned down Thursday night, according to local media reports. Built in 1914, the general store was a favorite stopping point for generations of visitors, from train travelers to bicycle riders pedaling along the flat Railroad Grade Road. Though it had occasionally been vacant through the years, it remained a charming spot in a charming town that straddles Ashe and Watauga counties. Most recently, Matt and Andrea Connell bought the store with the hope of returning it to its roots as a mom-and-pop store. According to Watauga Online, the fire started around 10 p.m. Photos of the fire show the store engulfed in a towering blaze.
