Today, the U.S. National Science Foundation awarded its latest grants through PREM, Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials, to support eight collaborative research teams across the United States that will increase diversity in cutting-edge materials research, education and professions.
Each six-year award provides nearly $4,000,000 for a total NSF investment of more than $30,000,000 and will support materials research partnerships between minority-serving institutions and large-scale, NSF-supported research facilities.
In addition to supporting new discoveries, the PREM pathway provides institutional support to increase recruitment, retention and degree-attainment by underrepresented groups, and provides underserved communities with access to materials research and education. The awards are intended to support and motivate a diverse cohort of students through graduation, the pursuit of higher education, and rewarding careers.
CHICAGO – The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has awarded a total of 6 students the Bound to Stay Bound and Melcher Scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year. Additionally, ALSC has sponsored 2 Spectrum Scholars and 1 additional Spectrum Scholar made possible through the generous support of Ellen Fader, 2005-2006 past-president. Four recipients were awarded the Bound to Stay Bound Books scholarship, which is made possible by Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. All four recipients will receive $8,000 in scholarship aid for the 2021-2022 academic year. The four recipients are Molly Boehm, attending Longwood University; Dana Fanslow, attending the University of Illinois; Lindsay Robins, attending North Carolina Central University; and Scott Shaffer, attending Clarion University.
TSU President Glenda Baskin Glover was among the speakers, as was James Ammons, former president of FAMU and North Carolina Central University, who is now chancellor at Southern University at New Orleans.
“FAMU educated me, but Dr. Humphries prepared me for my life’s work,” said Ammons, who served as provost under Humphries.
FAMU President Larry Robinson, a nuclear chemist by training who was recruited to FAMU more than two decades ago by Humphries, described the occasion as a “celebration of life for this great American, an administrator who was eminently brilliant, a visionary, whose brilliance was on constant display.”
