ASPIRING investors across the region have lost almost £10m to shady cyber-criminals setting up bogus companies. Now, Northumbria Police is backing a national campaign aimed at raising awareness of clone firm investment scams which sees fraudsters snap up people s cash by imitating genuine investment firms. As part of the scheme, con-artists will set up a fake firm by copying all of the relevant details of a legitimate financial company - convincing customers they are the real deal and pocketing their cash. Eager investors across the North-East lost a total of £9.5m between December 2019 and 2020. Northumbria saw a total of £3.9m lost, with those aged 20- 29 most affected. Nationally, reported losses sit at £78 million.

Police issue warning after further courier fraud

Cleveland Police CLEVELAND Police have issued a warning after another case of courier fraud. Police received a call from Yorkshire Bank in Hartlepool on Monday (December 14) after staff made routine checks when an elderly customer was contacted over the phone and asked to transfer cash by fraudsters. Thankfully due to the banks protocol no money was handed over and the incident was reported to police. Police are appealing for everyone to speak to older or more vulnerable friends and relations about courier fraud and to stress their simple messages: n Police or banks would NEVER ask you to withdraw cash to give a courier to pick up.
