POLICE in Cumbria are raising awareness of a shocking and inhumane crime ­ and urge anyone who fears for the safety of others to speak out. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a form of both child and sexual abuse, and refers to the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical purposes. The illegal procedure – which provides no health benefits – is typically performed on girls aged from newborns up to 15 years old, and can leave victims suffering from both physical and mental health issues for the rest of their life. If carried out by anyone in the UK, or a girl is taken out of the country to have the procedure performed, the offender will face up to 14 years in prison.
