Pro-football player and Gainesville native, Deshaun Watson, has established an endowed scholarship with The North Georgia Community Foundation (NGCF) that will award scholarships to Gainesville High School seniors.
According to a press release from NGCF, education is a major priority to the Deshaun Watson Foundation, and the Deshaun Watson Scholarship Fund will award two $2,500 scholarships per year to Gainesville High School seniors that have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.
“We appreciate the trust that Deshaun Watson has instilled in NGCF by establishing this generous scholarship fund. As an endowed scholarship, it will “exist forever.” said Michelle Prater, President & CEO of NGCF in a prepared statement. “This is a great example of what our organization does every day. We help people with a passion for giving, develop a tangible plan for how their legacy will be lived out.”
Opinion: Community support made it possible to help many during COVID-19 Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Thanks to very generous community support, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been able to aid almost 3,000 people suffering from the effects of COVID-19. During this nine month period, that is more than double the number of families helped in the entire year before the virus appeared, and with twice as much aid.
Financial support has come in the form of grants and donations: two COVID Relief Grants from North Georgia Community Foundation (April and December) and the SVdP Council of Atlanta, annual grants from United Way and Jackson EMC plus several grants from the Cresswind Community Foundation. Monetary donations from the parishioners at St. Michael Catholic Church and individuals in the community have also increased significantly during this period.
Just in time for Christmas, staff with the North Georgia Community Foundation announced that more than $1 million in COVID-19 Relief grants have been awarded throughout the North Georgia community.
Since April, the foundation has awarded 133 grants in 21 North Georgia counties throughout 11 grant cycles, according to a press release from NGCF. The latest round of grants was given to local nonprofits, schools and programs assisting needy individuals and families directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michelle Prater, president and CEO of the foundation, said, “NGCF is committed to addressing the urgent needs in our community. Many of these needs were magnified during the pandemic and we felt it was our responsibility to step up and provide immediate support.”
