NDSU Pharmacy Student Receives National Award from U S Public Health Service

(Fargo, ND) A big honor coming down for one North Dakota State University student making a difference in patient care. For her work to help underserved populations, NDSU pharmacy student Karly Westra this week received the U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award. For the past two years, Westra served as ambulatory care clinical pharmacy intern at Family HealthCare, a local clinic that cares for underserved patients who may be homeless, have low health literacy, limited resources, language barriers, or other barriers to receiving health care. Each week, Westra partners with this patient population. She helps them access care and increase their chances of optimal outcomes in the following areas:  hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment, tobacco use disorder, diabetes, anticoagulation, transitions of care, and other chronic disease states. She assists in direct patient care and in population health efforts to improve outcomes.

North Dakota lawmakers pass higher-ed funding bill without going to conference committee

The legislation includes more than $686.6 million in state funding for the system and its 11 institutions. 1:00 pm, Apr. 23, 2021 × Tammy Dolan This week, for the possibly the first time in 20 years, North Dakota’s Legislature passed the higher education funding bill without the bill first going through a conference committee. The budget, typically one of the last approved by lawmakers, was largely the same as set forth in January by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The legislation includes more than $686.6 million in state funding for the system and its 11 institutions. It’s a long way from Gov. Doug Burgum’s proposed budget in December, which called for a 7.5% cut to the North Dakota higher-ed system amid falling enrollments across the North Dakota University System. It would have meant the loss of around 200 jobs systemwide, higher-ed leaders had estimated at the time.
