The economic impact of the North Dakota University System (NDUS) on the state has risen to an estimated $5.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2019, according to a recent report by North Dakota State University s Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. The economic impacts include both direct and secondary expenditures.
“As the report illustrates, higher education is vital to North Dakota’s economy,” said NDUS Chancellor Mark Hagerott. “Higher education invests in people and the overall growth of knowledge for young people and adult learners. Higher education directly influences these learners as well as the workplaces that hire these workers. Our goal is to always work toward the betterment of the entire state.”
Gov. Doug Burgum on Tuesday delivered his 2021 State of the State Address, reflecting on the substantial progress and historic challenges of the past year and calling for bold action and investments in infrastructure and other priorities to position North Dakota for an even brighter future. Video of the address is available here.
Addressing a joint session of the 67th Legislative Assembly on the first day of its biennial session, Burgum noted North Dakotans have experienced much this past year, enduring “a flock of black swan events” including flooding, drought, the ongoing global pandemic, market crashes and major economic contractions that tested citizens in ways no one could have expected.

Four universities, led by the University of Nebraska, are joining forces in making the case that the new headquarters for the U.S. Space Command should be located in the Cornhusker State.
In an op-ed published Sunday in the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, the coalition said Nebraska offers an unmatched quality of life and a strong support for the military and education.
The pitch from NU President Ted Carter; Mitch Daniels, president of Purdue University; Mark Hagerott, chancellor of the North Dakota University System, and Richard Myers, president of Kansas State University; aims to create a bigger value-added proposition.
