Federal funding to help UNT Health Science Center lead health literacy outreach in seven states
Federal funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will allow The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC) to serve as a leader in health literacy outreach.
Gibson D. Lewis Health Sciences Library is one of seven Regional Medical Libraries (RML) in the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM). RMLs carry out regional and national programs that provide U.S. researchers, health professionals, public health workforce, educators, and the public with equal access to biomedical and health information resources and data.
Their store encourages masks, though they not technically required. Morris said they offer a 5% discount for people who wear one.
“We want to encourage people to do the right thing. We feel like we should be wearing masks until we really get through this, but by offering the 5% discount, it’s kind of just an encouragement. We’ll take a little bit of hit so you can help keep us safe, keep you safe,” he explained.

“It feels good to give back because I was from a community like this when I was growing up. I was born in Houston, Texas, so it’s good to be able to reach out like this,” Hua said. “People have been very welcoming.”
The temple has served as a food distribution site every Wednesday during the pandemic, according to Rev. Lam Nguyen. That particular area of the community faces challenges when it comes to registering for the vaccine, Rev. Nguyen said.
“They don’t speak English well. They don’t use technology, like internet to register and they don’t even know how to call in to register,” Nguyen said. “It is kind of difficult to spread the word to the people at this time. If we’re all working together, I think we can make this happen.”
