NIU’s Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and University Chorus to host in-person and virtual concert DeKALB – NIU’s Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and University Chorus will host a concert, available for in-person viewing for family members and virtual streaming, from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building. The event will be the first live concert from these three groups since February 2020. The three music groups will be performing separately with the University Chorus performing global folk music, the Chamber Choir with music of the 17th Century English Madrigal school and the Concert Choir with original compositions, said Eric Johnson, NIU’s director of Choral Activities.

Moment of reflection to be held for anniversary of shooting

Northern Star DeKALB – Valentine’s Day on the NIU campus will forever be affected by the shooting that killed five students and left 21 injured, eight in critical condition inside of Cole Hall’s auditorium after the gunman entered a class and opened fire.  On Sunday, NIU’s Forward, Together Forward organization will ring bells five times at 3:06 p.m. outside of Cole Hall as a moment of reflection in remembrance of the five who lost their lives on Feb. 14, 2008, according to the NIU calendar. NIU does everything it can to honor the victims, Catalina Garcia, Daniel Parmenter, Gayle Dubowski, Julianna Gehant and Ryanne Mace through their Forward, Together Forward website and the Memorial Garden outside of the Cole Hall Plaza.

City Council to discuss firefighter wellness program, laundromat liquor license

Northern Star DeKALB – City Council members will consider three resolutions Monday to establish a wellness program that would give DeKalb firefighters a reason to voluntarily prepare for their health care costs after retirement. In December, the council unanimously approved a four-year contract between the city and the DeKalb firefighter union. The contract is intended to implement an improved wellness program structure.  The three resolutions up for a vote at Monday’s meeting include adding the Illinois Public Pension Fund Association Deferred Compensation Plan as an employee benefit, voluntary employees’ beneficiary association to pay life, sick, accident or similar benefits and adding a tax-exempt base for funding retiree health benefits.

NIU gymnastics starts season off with first MAC win

Northern Star DeKALB NIU gymnastics opened up its 2021 competition season this past weekend with three road contests as its hopes of defending the MAC championship began. Friday, the team traveled to compete in the Tennessee Collegiate Classic, where the team went up against Southeast Missouri State University and Lindenwood University in the triangular meet. The Huskies posted a team score of 193.100 Friday night in Lebanon, Tennessee, giving the squad a third place finish in the meet. Lindenwood took home the team victory with a final team score of 193.900. Though the team finished in third, NIU did have multiple individual medalists for its first meet of the season. Sophomore Natalie Hamp won the individual bars competition with a score of 9.825. Seniors Mia Lord and Nicolette DiPrisco also medaled as individuals. Lord finished tied for second on the beam, and DiPrisco took third with her floor routine.
