A Northern New Mexico College security officer spotted a man and woman running from the Serpa Building area at the college, following a call from the alarm company regarding a commercial burglary.
Española Police Officer Abe Maes responded to the incident at 7:31 a.m., April 3 and spoke with Northern Security Officer Melvin Moquino, who told him the alarm notification was at the Serpa Building.
Moquino told him two people ran from the area and jumped the fence, then fled southbound down Railroad Avenue. The security guard told Maes that he found several items in a backpack and another bag and after entering the building, he saw the storeroom had been ransacked.

Wrestlers from five New Mexico high schools competed at Western New Mexico University’s football stadium in Silver City last Friday in a rare outdoors, dual-match competition hosted by Silver High School. Silver and WNMU hope to collaborate to make this an annual event.
Wrestling, al fresco.
A unique partnership between Silver High and Western New Mexico last weekend created one of the most unusual scenes of the year in what has already been the most unconventional of prep sports seasons:
Outdoor wrestling.

“We started doing our research,” said Silver athletic director Gary Allison. “We couldn’t find anything else at the high school level that does that. We decided … to see if we could be the first.”
The late Mrs. Esperanza Gonzales, like many of her generation, was a strong leader with a si se puede (can-do) and you can too attitude.
Elementary teacher Gonzales in 1971 organized a school-based effort to raise student and parental pride in their educational foundation and community.
She wanted to change the letter N (for El Rito Normal School) to a letter E to represent the El Rito Elementary School. The latter was the only school remaining.
The letter E remains symbolic of both institutions and the community to this day. However, it fell into fading disrepair. Liability concerns stopped the childrenâs and Gonzalesâ forays to its annual painting fundraisers.
