Pawtucket plans vaccine block party for high school students

“Our students have been through a lot,” said Emily Rizzo, a spokeswoman for the mayor. “Why not offer them an engaging experience rather than something they have to do?”  Pawtucket has already vaccinated 650 students between the ages of 16 and 18. The state s goal is for them to vaccinate 1,700 more students in that age group.   High schools across Rhode Island have scheduled vaccination clinics for their students over the age of 16; the first one was Monday at Cranston High School East. Gov. Dan McKee said last week that his administration would work with any high school that wants to host a vaccination clinic for students.

NPHS senior Williams headed to Harvard

4/27/2021 Samantha Williams, a senior at North Providence High School, has been accepted into Harvard University. NORTH PROVIDENCE – They call it Ivy Day. All eight Ivy League schools release their admission decisions on the same day each year, as thousands of hopeful first-year students wait with bated breath to learn whether they’ve been accepted. North Providence High School senior Samantha Williams had been anxiously anticipating Ivy Day 2021, saying she applied to 11 schools, including several Ivy League institutions, but always aspired to be accepted into Harvard University. “Since elementary school, if I didn’t get an A on a spelling test I’d be so panicked about it,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to go to a nice college, but I didn’t think it would be Harvard … that was the dream,” she said.

Lombardi begins planning for new turf field

“It’s sorely needed,” he said. After meeting with representatives from RAD Sports and Gale Associates, Lombardi said he now believes that a new synthetic fabric field is the way to go as the town looks to do the renovations. He said he knows he previously said he wasn’t a big fan of artificial turf, due to concerns among some about potential health impacts of crumb rubber on student-athletes, but representatives from RAD and Gale, both with experience installing similar facilities all over New England, persuaded him that the newest synthetic fabric is as safe as it comes. Also important, he said, is that an artificial surface will impact the longevity of the field.
