The North Providence Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) commended officers involved in the arrest of a homicide suspect for displaying exemplary judgement and deploying a less lethal use of force while effecting a dangerous arrest over the weekend.
Officers were called to the Cumberland Farms on Smith Street around 4:00 Saturday afternoon for a report of a fight. The victim, 60-year-old Brian Cervini, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds. He later died at the hospital.
The suspect, 27-year-old Christopher Cabajal, fled the scene. Witnesses helped direct officers to Cabajal s whereabouts at Rhode Island Billiard Bar and Bistro. Upon arriving, officers attempted to handcuff Cabajal, who violently resisted arrest. After multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation with verbal commands, officers were forced to deploy a taser on Cabajal. He was then taken into custody.

NORTH PROVIDENCE – As a young man first getting into law enforcement, Alfredo Ruggiero Jr., like many others, dreamed of one day returning to his hometown to lead its police department.
Ruggiero, 54 and the town’s deputy chief for the past year, said he was surprised and humbled upon hearing from Mayor Charles Lombardi that the mayor would not be running a search for a new chief and would make Ruggiero the replacement for the retiring Chief Arthur Martins when Martins leaves North Providence in June. That being the case, he said he’s definitely ready to assume the department’s top job.

LOS ANGELES (AP) A man who was shot and killed by Los Angeles officers over the weekend had been previously shot by police in Rhode Island in 2018, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County coroner identified the man as 34-year-old Richard Solitro. His autopsy was listed as pending Monday afternoon.
Solitro was wearing body armor Saturday when he confronted police officers in Hollywood, police said.
The altercation initially began when Solitro cut off a police vehicle as the officers responded to another call with the car’s lights and sirens turned on. Solitro driving a black sedan that had words and phrases written on it, such as “King Satan 666” hit his brakes and backed into the car and got out, holding his right hand behind his back.
