Hempfield Area plans vaccine clinic for students 16 and older

Hempfield Area School District students may receive their first dose of the covid-19 vaccine during a clinic Tuesday at the high school field house. Other clinics are planned this month for students across the region. Shots of the Pfizer vaccine will be administered from 3 to 7 p.m. in Hempfield through cooperation with Rite Aid. The clinic is open to anyone 16 and older, including adults living in the community. “While vaccinations are now more readily available, we are supporting this opportunity on school property as it makes it more convenient for any eligible (16 and older) and interested students,” Superintendent Tammy Wolicki said.

Four of the nine directors on the North Hills school board are up for election this year, but only two of the incumbents are seeking another four-year term in office. Annette Givengo Nolish and Kathy Reid will step down after completing their terms at the end of the year. First-term incumbents Allison Mathis and Sandy Kozera are among the eight candidates who cross-filed on the Democrat and Republican tickets for the May 18 primary. The other candidates are Dale Bricker Jr., John C. Hoffman Jr., Dana Merlino, Joe Muha, Elizabeth Nease and Michael Santucci.

North Hills School District planning vaccine clinic for students 16 and older

North Hills School District officials are planning an appointment-only coronavirus vaccine clinic for students 16 and older next month. Students interested in getting the Pfizer shot can sign up on the district’s website. Officials from Giant Eagle will be administering the vaccines on May 11 at the high school, according to information posted on the district website. The clinic will only be held if at least 60 students sign up by Friday at noon. If that number is met, emails will be sent next week to those who have pre-registered to select an appointment time.

North Hills mourns death of 17-year-old victim of single-car vehicle crash

The Ross Township community is mourning the death of a 17-year-old former North Hills High School student who died in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday night. Jacob Christopher Weiland of Pittsburgh was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on March 7 by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. in the 300 block of McIntyre Road when the Honda sedan Weiland was driving went off the road and struck a tree, according to Ross police. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Teen killed in single-vehicle crash in Ross

Ross Township police are investigating a crash that killed a 17-year-old boy Sunday. Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased at Jacob Weiland of Pittsburgh. The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. along the 300 block of McIntyre Road. Weiland was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s report. Township police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash and the investigation is ongoing. Police told WPXI there were no signs of drugs or alcohol and the likely cause was speed. There was a post on the North Hills School District website mourning the loss of a former student Sunday night.
