VERONA, Miss. (WTVA) A Verona police officer is being treated for injuries after a struggle with a man at a city convenience store.
Police Chief Marsenio Nunn says the officer and the man began to struggle inside the store around 3:30 this afternoon.
Nunn says the man attempted to get the officer s service weapon and it discharged during the struggle.
He says no one was hit by the gunshot.
Nunn says the man was taken into custody and the police officer was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo with injuries.
The crash was reported about 12:11 p.m.
MHP Public Information Officer Staff Sgt. Derrick M. Beckom said Stella L. Wofford, 50, of Houston was southbound when her red Ford Free car struck the rear of a southbound 2002 Cadillac driven by Brittany L. Williams, 38, of Pheba.
Both cars were in motion at the time of the crash.
The Cadillac ran off the right side of the road and overturned, ejecting passenger Charles Lushon Wofford, 54, of Houston. Wofford was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Staff Sgt. Beckom said.
Chickasaw County Coroner Michael Fowler pronounced Wofford dead at the scene.

CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - A two-vehicle crash left one person dead in Chickasaw County today.
The driver of a 2006 red Ford Free was heading south on MS 15 when her vehicle crashed into the rear of a 2002 Cadillac.
The Ford came to a stop on the northbound shoulder.
The Cadillac ran off the road and overturned, ejecting the passenger. The Chickasaw County coroner pronounced Charles Wofford, 54, dead at the scene.
The driver of the Cadillac was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
