MARQUETTE, MI The number of COVID-19 cases at Northern Michigan University is rising.
As of Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. one employee, 14 off-campus students and 10 on-campus students had active cases of the coronavirus. Officials have closed Temaki and Smoothie King restaurants due to a possible COVID exposure. It’s unknown how long the businesses will be shut down.
Next week is finals week, then graduation. NMU President Fritz Erickson is asking the campus community not to be lax and to continue wearing masks, socially distance and avoid large gatherings.
The Marquette County Health Department continues to offer students, faculty and staff Moderna and Pfizer vaccines after federal officials paused the use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

MARQUETTE To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation and select Michigan airports, are piloting a Travel Points Testing program this spring.
The goal is to bring antigen COVID-19 testing to locations with high volumes of travel, the State Emergency Operations Center reported.
Quick and cost-free testing will be offered at several Michigan Welcome Centers and airports throughout the state, with results available in as little as 15 minutes. Walk-ups are taken as space allows, and an option to register online via a mobile device will also be available.

So, during earth week, NMU wants to remind the public that little things, like throwing that plastic bottle into the recycle bin, can go a long way. Or, as Professor Mittlefehldt says “think locally; act globally.”
