Bui Power to add 50MW to the national grid

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) will, by the end of March this year, add 50 megawatt (50mw) of solar energy to the national grid.
The innovation is backed by Parliament’s amendment of Bui Power Authority Act (Act 740), which enables the Authority to develop renewable energy and other clean energy alternatives in the country.
The 50mw renewable energy source, which is part of the Authority’s 250mw Hydro-Solar Hybrid project, was announced on Friday during a brief media engagement in Accra.
The Deputy Chief Officer of the BPA, Dr George Tettey, explained that the project aimed at assisting the government to achieve the 10% power generation from renewable energy sources target by 2030.

Chamba, a farming community in the Nanumba North Municipality in the Northern Region, is facing an acute water crisis following a rainstorm that hit the area three days ago.
The community of more than 15,000 residents which lies along the Bimbilla-Salaga road depend predominantly on mechanised boreholes for potable water.
However, after the rainstorm, about 16 high tension poles were destroyed, cutting off the Chamba community from electricity supply and disrupting water supply since all the boreholes are run on electricity.
The downpour affected about six adjoining communities and ripped off the roofs of about 100 houses and displaced many residents in the area.

Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) have activated the free supply of electricity and water to lifeline consumers under the COVID-19 relief package as directed by the government.
This covers consumers who use between zero and 50 kilowatts per hour of electricity per month and domestic customers on category 611 who consume between zero to five cubic metres of water in a month.
This is in line with the government’s decision to continue to absorb bills of active lifeline electricity and water users for January, February and March 2021.
COVID-19 relief
Lifeline customers have benefited from the government’s free utility relief since April 2020 when the nation began implementing various interventions to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on local households.
