(WMBF) - The North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety promoted a female to the rank of captain for the first time in 20 years. Capt. Dana Crowell has been with the NMBDPS for 19 years. The Loris native started at the department after graduating from the University of Louisville in 2002. Over the years, Crowell has worked in several different roles including field training officer and K9 handler.

Councilmembers approved a resolution to keep more law enforcement boots on the ground during the holiday week. Pat Dowling, the city’s spokesperson, said there aren’t enough police officers to handle additional tourist traffic during the Memorial Day holiday. The resolution will provide the additional holiday backup the city needs.

(WMBF) - A raffle raising money to build a memorial for fallen North Myrtle Beach officer Sgt. Gordon Best ends Monday. Cormac Arms and Outfitters will host the raffle at 1 p.m. and tickets are $10. All proceeds will go toward constructing the memorial. The store’s general manager, Chuck Dunn, is a retired law enforcement officer. He said they’ve raised roughly $9,000 with the help from the community. He added the store didn’t do this for them, rather for Best’s family, friends and for people to have a place to go to honor him.

Gordon Best who died in the line of duty on January 1. Clayton Hucks, 20, organized the run/walk after originally planning to just do the run by himself. Best’s badge number was 178, so Hucks planned the course to be 1.78 miles in his honor.
