North Medford High School senior one of only seven to receive NROTC scholarship

MEDFORD, Ore. A North Medford High School senior is one of seven on the west coast who received a scholarship for the Marine Corps. Brett Rucker is a lineman on the Black Tornado football team and got the NROTC scholarship, which is for $180,000. He is only one of four recipients in Oregon with seven chosen between Alaska and California out of 60 applicants. Rucker was evaluated and compared to his peers based on integrity, leadership, having over a 3.7 GPA and 1200 SAT score, as well as pull-ups, crunches and a three-mile run. His recruiter surprised him with the check at one of his practices last week.

North Medford H S prepares for hybrid return - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

MEDFORD, Ore.- Today is the first of two days of freshman orientation at North Medford High School ahead of a hybrid return to campus at the end of the month. Students and administrators say they’re ready to return to campus, though it still comes with important COVID guidelines to follow. “They communicated, and we know that they need to be back on campus,” North Medford High School Principal Dan Smith said of students returning. After having an empty campus for a year, he is just as excited as students to see a return to the classroom. This week, freshman are attending orientation on a school campus they’ve never set foot on before. They’ve been learning online since last year.

Medford high schools hosting book drive - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

North and South Medford High School Honor Society groups are hosting a book drive for elementary students. The joint community service project is collecting English and Spanish language children’s books. The students ask that the books be in new or gently used condition. Donations can be dropped off at the South Medford High School Library book depository or the North Medford High School front office. Books are being distributed on February 11th at both high schools. The honor students ask books to be submitted before January 29th. NBC5 News reporter Mariah Mills is a Medford native. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism. She also minored in sociology.
