Young woman falls 35m after ledge gives way during rescue

A young woman who fell 35m down a steep slope after getting stuck on a ledge partway up Besom Hill, Oldham, managed to escape with no major injuries.
Oldham Mountain Rescue Team were called to Besom Hill, near Grains Bar, on Friday afternoon, after a young woman got herself stuck on a ledge up the hill.
Whilst the team were setting up equipment to get her back to safety, the ledge under her feet gave way, sending her plunging 35m down the steep shale slope, landing around 20m from the bottom.

A train shockingly derailed at Kirkby station this evening after hitting a buffer stop, operator Merseyrail has now confirmed. Investigators today launched a probe into how the train managed to leave the tracks in such dangerous fashion just after 6.30pm, leaving behind very significant damage.
It has now emerged the driver of the Merseyrail service was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure.
Twelve passengers were on board the 6.35pm travelling from Knowsley toward Liverpool, along with two crew members.
A new healthcare hub could be created in a Lancashire village. Aspull Clinic in Haigh Road would be knocked down to make way for a two-storey health and wellbeing centre with a pharmacy also planned on the site. The neighbouring surgery would stay open until construction of the centre is complete after which it would also be demolished and turned into a car park. Plans by healthcare developer One Medical Group, which have been submitted to Wigan council, also feature out-of-hours facilities for ambulance staff. Around 10,000 patients could be registered with GPs at the new centre, according to a statement prepared by planning agent QAD Architects.
