The expansion comes at a good time to help address a critical shortage of EMS workers.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than 500 job openings for EMS professionals statewide.
“In an emergency situation, we’re confident that an ambulance will arrive quickly, but it’s becoming more of a challenge for understaffed rural departments to fill the demand,” said Jim Cousino, dean of Career and Technical Education. “North Central is meeting that need.”
At both NCMC’s Gaylord Center and the Alpena Fire Department, students can now complete EMS and paramedic courses leading to licensure as a nationally registered paramedic.

North Central Michigan College is joining forces with the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy to monitor the local environment.
The two will pool their resources to create community interest and bring in students who will learn and help with local conservation efforts. There are 50 nature preserves that need to be looked after and it’s an opportunity for students to get first hand experience. Together, they’ll monitor water quality and maintain local watersheds.
Executive Director of the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy, Josephine Roberts said they’ll also work to combat the threat of invasive species in the area. “Identification skills training for the students and really for us it’s like boots on the grounds that helps us do invasive species surveys right in our preserves,” she said.

In light of Derek Chauvin’s Murder conviction for the death of George Floyd, scholars are taking time to reflect on the significance of the case.
“It is a bit of an outlier with respect to that because at least looking at this from a broader pool of data or these types of incidences, it’s rare for law enforcement officers to be charged with these kinds of crimes,” says University of Michigan lawmaker in residence, Javed Ali.
He says this verdict places more accountability on police in the field.
“How will police forces across the country change their standards of applying lethal force?” Ali says, “With Derek Chauvin those types of tactics and technique probably need to be completely relooked-if there are police forces that think something like that would be acceptable.”
