That turned out to be good news.
âHad he not been wounded, he wouldnât be with us,â said Mary Anne Fassinger, his daughter. âWeâre very lucky to have him.â
Alfred Luconti shares memories in a video made for the Library of Congress American Folklife Center s Veterans History Project.
The injury occurred in December 1944, shortly before the U.S. Army tank on which PFC Luconti was serving took part in the Battle of the Bulge, the last German offensive of World War II. Had he stayed with the tank instead of being hospitalized, the likelihood is that Luconti would not have survived the battle.

Kerry Tomkowitz has a wildly delicious tradition at Christmas.
The Peters Township resident and several of her friends have a party the Sunday before Christmas, which they call the âWild Rumpus,â named after their signature drink thatâs become a main part of the tradition.
âWe are three households of friends who feel like family,â Tomkowitz said in an email.
This year the party will be virtual, Tomkowitz said, but theyâll still be drinking Wild Rumpus, which consists of one can of frozen pink lemonade, one cup of raspberry vodka, one bottle of Prosecco and fresh raspberries for garnish.

Dinman, 91, whose family fled Germany in the 1930s as Adolf Hitler rose to power, delights in lighting the menorah, and recounting the story of the origin of Hanukkah.
The COVID-19 pandemic, though, ended that two-decade-long tradition.
âShe loves coming to the house. She loves coming for the food, she likes lighting the candles, she likes telling the story every year. And this year, she canât do that,â said Mahoney. âShe lives for this. Itâs terrible.â
