JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jaheim Bentley, a senior at Lee High School, took a detour during his school day last week at lunchtime. He submitted his vote in support of changing the school s name.
Bentley, who is a part of student government and is a member of the local I m A Star Foundation, where he mentors fifth and sixth-grade students, originally didn t plan on voting. But after thinking it through, he got into line early last Monday and said poll workers told him he was the first student to vote at the time.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A group of community organizations renewed its demands that Mayor Curry follow through on his commitment to remove Confederate monuments.
During a news conference on Tuesday, the groups also said they are concerned that an unofficial committee convened by the Mayor last year has violated government in the sunshine policies.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – “Take ‘Em Down Jacksonville” rallied on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday morning, telling Mayor Lenny Curry to keep his promise to remove all the Confederate statues in Jacksonville.
Last June, Curry ordered the statue in what was then known as Hemming Park now James Weldon Johnson Park to be removed. At that time, responding to the mood of the city, state and country in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer the previous month, Curry announced that all Confederate monuments in the city would be removed.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The second annual Black Lives Matter 5K drew even more runners than last year to downtown Jacksonville on Saturday as they sought to celebrate and elevate Black lives.
The race kicked off at Riverfront Plaza, the site of the old Jacksonville Landing, and the event included live entertainment, vendors and food trucks.
The BLM5K has partnered with national charities that support those who are disadvantaged, groups that uplift and empower all communities, as well as organizations fighting for social justice.
