Northern Ontario continues to be ignored in plans to expand and grow the provincial economy.
That claim comes from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
She says nothing has been done to fix inequities between the south and north since the early 90’s.
“Northern municipalities spent two decades struggling to recover from governments that kept taking us in the wrong direction. The previous Conservative governments’ (1995-2003) billions in downloads hit small northern and rural municipalities the hardest.”
Horwath says the Ford government has continued the trend by slashing funding to several critical programs for this region.
She notes because of government inaction, local municipalities have been forced to play catch-up over the past two decades.

The MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North is calling on local leaders to keep the heat on in order to protect the future of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay.
A provincial bill has been introduced to establish NOSM as an independent, standalone degree-granting institution, raising local concerns on the schools status in the City.
Michael Gravelle says this is a topic that can’t be ignored.
Gravelle stresses there has been no consultation on the proposal.
“Not with the University itself (Lakehead) or Universities. Not with the business community. Not with the Indigenous community. Not with the municipal associations. I think those consultations need to take place before we move forward on a decision such as this.”
