The Kansas City Royals No. 9 prospect Nick Pratto belted three home runs for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in a 15-5 victory over the Springfield Cardinals on Friday.
Pratto went 3-for-4, driving in five runs against the Cardinals. He hit a solo home run in the first inning, a three-run homer in the fourth and another solo shot in the ninth. Pratto s blast in the ninth followed Bobby Witt Jr. s two-run home run.
The 22-year-old first baseman has started the Double-A season slow as he was hitting .200 on the young season before Friday s offensive outpouring. Pratto is slashing .260/.415/.640 on the year with a 1.055 on-base plus slugging percentage. With his three home runs on Friday, Pratto leads the team in that category with five on the year.
Zach Reks is percolating in Triple-A, and because he’s on the 40-man roster he’s just a phone call away from reaching the majors. That’s the focus for now, but on the back burner is an idea he has already put in motion: he’s starting a non-profit coffee company.
He’s not sure yet of the name, or who might join him, or what the final scope of the organization will be. But the germ of the idea was to help minor league players.
“The original aim of the whole project is to help struggling minor league players,” Reks said last week. “I know a lot of minor league players don’t get paid a huge signing bonus, and a lot of people that come from Latin countries don’t have a lot to their name right now. The offseasons can be a real big struggle.”
Hits were at a premium for the three Dodgers minor league affiliates in action on Wednesday night.
Player of the day
It’s been a solid start to the season for
Julian Smith for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga. He pitched four scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts on Wednesday night, keeping the Quakes in the game despite a dismal offensive night for the home team.
The Dodgers drafted Smith, who turns 24 in June, in the 15th round in 2018. His first outing was another four strong relief innings, earning the win on May 5 while allowing only one unearned run. On the season, Smith has a 0.00 ERA in eight innings, with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
