NACS severs ties with contractor
Himsel says best option to open Aspen Meadow in fall
ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette
Northwest Allen County Schools on Monday fired the contractor tasked with building its newest elementary school.
The district had “no desire” to terminate the contract with Mosaic Building Solutions, Superintendent Chris Himsel said after the school board meeting. However, he said, that was the best option to ensure Aspen Meadow Elementary School can welcome students in August.
Himsel did not specify the problems with Mosaic, which was awarded a construction contract in 2018 for $25,744,660.
Aspen Meadow s August 2020 opening was delayed last spring. At that time, Himsel said the roof, gym, certain classroom spaces and outdoor areas wouldn t be substantially completed before the start of the 2020-21 academic year, even under the best circumstances.

Months of COVID-19 data show social gatherings and extracurricular activities are still more likely to spread the coronavirus among children than the school day, Allen County s top doctor said.
That hasn t stopped Travis Striggle from letting his third and fifth grade daughters lead a normal life during the pandemic, and he s not alone.
He invited Northwest Allen County Schools leaders to visit his street, whose residents include 10 children who attend Oak View Elementary School and two others who attend a district secondary school, he said.

NACS teachers supporting mask-wearing, COVID-19 protocols

As parents lobby the Northwest Allen County Schools board to relax masking rules, teachers are speaking up in support of mask-wearing and other novel coronavirus precautions.
Such protocols make in-person instruction possible during the pandemic, the Northwest Allen County Education Association said in a statement. To safely achieve the in-person structure, precautionary measures such as the wearing of masks and social distancing must be implemented and respected, the union said. These precautionary measures allow educators to effectively support the academic success and emotional health of the thousands of NACS students and families in our community.
