to elect Latino Democrats A group of Latino leaders in Tennessee has formed a political action committee with the goal of electing Latino Democrats in the state. Fuerza Democrats Tennessee recently registered as a PAC with the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office, executive director Sandra Sepulveda said Thursday. The group “wants to ensure that the growing Latino population in the state is reflected at all levels of government,” according to a news release. It will be focused on mobilizing Latino candidates and voters. Sepulveda serves on Nashville’s Metro Council as its first Latina member. Fuerza Democrats Tennessee grew out of Middle Tennessee Hispanic Democrats, which was established in 2009.

(AP) A former Tennessee corrections officer has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for taking part in the beating of an inmate along with other officers, prosecutors said. Jonathan York is one of six Tennessee Department of Correction officers who have pleaded guilty to using unlawful force against an inmate and covering up the beating at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville. According to evidence that was part of York s guilty plea, York and other officers entered the cell of an inmate in the prison s mental health unit on Feb. 1, 2019.

The registered sex offender then filed another appeal, which was denied last week. Christopher N. Hernandez decided to challenge the courts in 2020 suggesting that he never had the effective assistance of counsel. However, court documents released last year on November 30th showed the Court of Criminal Appeals believed he did indeed have the effective assistance of counsel. Hernandez was convicted on nine counts of Rape of a Child, two counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery and one count of Solicitation of a Minor. Those convictions were heard in the courtroom of Judge Royce Taylor, who has since retired. The convictions also came with a twenty-year sentence in prison in exchange for Hernandez waiving his right to appeal.
