Stocks pull back as stimulus hopes fade
Bad news was good news for Wall Street early Friday. Stocks rose at the opening bell to hit more new records despite the fact that the United States government reported a surprise loss of 140,000 jobs in December. The hope was bad news would lead to more stimulus.
But the Dow gave up its earlier gains towards the end of the day and was flat, as investors now seem to be worried that more help will not soon be coming. The Washington Post reported Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, said he would “absolutely not” support another round of checks.
